Anesthesia and intensive care medicine are complex processes determined by many factors and carried out on very heterogeneous patient groups. As a result, it is difficult to reduce medical quality to parameters and define and compare it. Furthermore, modern medicine increasingly finds itself between the conflicting priorities of medical, ethical and economic requirements.
This is where the role of outcome research directly comes into play: The medical field is increasingly challenged to prove the effectiveness and efficiency of its actions. Yet this is only possible if the prerequisites for an objective and critical evaluation of the outcomes are met.
